The National Assembly unanimously approved a motion to give the late President Dr Cheddi Jagan due recognition as the longest serving Member of Parliament (MP).
A special edition of the Hansard containing Jagan’s speeches during the period he served was also prepared. The motion was passed on Friday last with several amendments put forward by the PNCR-1G, which the PPP/C approved in order to get the main opposition’s support to honour Jagan’s contributions to the National Assembly.
The motion was put forward by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds with the first resolution calling for the National Assembly to give due recognition to Jagan for his 45 years of service on the anniversary of his entry to the house 60 years ago. Jagan entered parliament at the age of 29 on December 18, 1947 as a Member of the Legislature having won the Central Demerara seat, covering from Buxton to Kitty.
The second resolution was substantially amended but it was finally agreed that the Assembly would pay tribute to Jagan and a special edition of the Hansard with a collection of his speeches spanning his 45 years in the Assembly would be prepared for display in the parliament library.
