Christmas creates a spirit of oneness in which all can share and its underlying message of hope holds a poignant relevance for the nation, PNCR Leader and Leader of the Opposition Robert Corbin said.
Extending Christmas greetings to Guyanese at home and abroad Corbin said that the true significance of Christmas lies in the fact that while it is a Christian commemorative event, it rises above considerations of religion, race, creed and political affiliation.
As everyone takes a break, however fleeting, from the rigours of their respective responsibilities, he hoped that all could use some time to contemplate ways of taking Guyana forward and in so doing help find a new resolve to improve the overall condition of “our ailing country.”
Reflecting on an important personal moment in which lives were affected this year, he said that people could also reflect on the road travelled over the past year. No Guyanese would ever forget the serious impact of the draconian value-added tax (VAT) on their lives, he said.
Stating that Christmas ought to provide some respite from trials and difficulties, he said that even at this time of year, problems and pressures continue to knock on the doors. He extended a special wish to those who were challenged this year through bereavement, illness, material difficulty, or for reason or another, find it difficult to contemplate the season with the special sense of joy that all should feel at this time.
To Guyanese and friends on holiday in Guyana, he said, their annual pilgrimage brings joy to families here and adds to the unique Guyanese celebration.
Aware of the responsibilities to the young people, poor, dispossessed and to those whose lives are deficient in one way or another, he said that the PNCR was resolved to work with all others charged with running the country’s affairs to give real meaning to what the season represents.
On behalf of his wife and family, and the PNCR and extending his best wishes for a warm and wonderful Christmas, he said, “Let us, by our acts of charity, by our generosity and by our genuine resolve to build a better Guyana, make this Christmas a truly memorable one for all our people.”
