A 41-year-old woman accused of robbing a man of over $200,000 after inviting him to spend the night with her was released on self-bail when she appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Chandradai Sewchand of Parika, East Bank Essequibo pleaded not guilty to the charge of simple larceny and was released on self-bail by Magistrate Fazil Azeez.
It is alleged that last Tuesday at Parika she stole from Pernell Fredricks a haversack, a hard pants, a jersey, a hammock, a bed sheet and $240,000 with a total value of $281,000.
Reports are that Fredricks was drinking at a bar when the defendant asked him for $100 which he refused to give her. She reportedly then invited him to spend the night with her. They were leaving to go to her home when she allegedly snatched his bag and escaped.
However, Sewchand told the court that she had asked Fredricks for $100 and he refused to give her. She said that the next day he gave her $10,000 to tell him where the person with whom he spent the night resided. She stated that she did not tell him as she was working and did not have the time. She begged the magistrate to let her go on self-bail saying that she didn’t have money to bail herself. She pleaded and promised that she would be present whenever the matter is called at court.
Police Prosecutor Ramsahoye Rambajue informed the court that it was unlikely that the virtual complainant would return for the trial as he lived in the Northwest.
After listening to them, the magistrate released Sewchand on self-bail and ordered her to return to court on January 31 next year at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court. He warned her that if she didn’t, she would be arrested.
