The woman who was brutally chopped about the body by her husband, who then killed himself, is on the road to recovery and has been moved to the open ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Shreemattie Vivekanand was hacked about her body by her now-dead husband Robert Kumar Jhagru last week Monday. Minutes after the incident, which occurred at the couple’s Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara home, Jhagru reportedly ingested a poisonous substance. The man succumbed while being treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital around 4.30 am the next day.
Vivekanand, a fish vendor had been in danger of losing her hands but following a successful operation, it is highly unlikely that this would happen, though she lost a finger.
Her sister, Rona told Stabroek News yesterday that Vivekanand was conscious and had been taken off the saline. She said that her sister was even eating a little though she was still in some pain and had been transferred to the female ward of the medical institution. Both of Vivekanand’s hands were in casts and Rona said that she was moving her left hand a little while her right hand hurts when she tries to move it. Rona said too that her sister could not stand up for very long as whenever she does so her “head swings”.
During a 15-minute ordeal, Vivekanand was hacked about her body with a chopper that she used to ply her trade, sustaining chops to both her hands, head, neck and back.
According to reports, on the day in question, Vivekanand’s husband flew into a rage just after 9 pm and started throwing accusations at her. From all appearances, Vivekanand was sitting on the bed when her husband locked the bedroom door and started hacking at her with a chopper. The couple’s 16-year-old daughter could only listen to her mother’s screams and plead with her father to stop hurting her mother.
Vivekanand’s sister later managed to kick open the door and several members of the community policing group also went to the woman’s aid.
