The Ministry of Agriculture has handed over two tubes used for maintaining drainage and irrigation to the Surapana Farmers Group in Linden.
According to a press release, a representative from the group, Roxanne Edwards yesterday received the donation of the 18-inch tubes, which was facilitated through the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (ND&IA). They will be used to enhance drainage in Nottinghamshire. Edwards said the donation was timely and that it will enhance drainage in her community.
Acting Chief Executive Officer at the ND&IA Lionel Wordsworth said the group will install the tubes through self-help while an ND&IA engineer will supervise the works. According to the release the ND&IA will continue to collaborate with all farmers, farming associations and local government authorities to prevent and reduce the incidence of flooding.
The ministry said it has bought almost $6M worth of drainage tubes which are being distributed to farmers groups in Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six. It said a 36-inch tube was recently delivered to farmers at Bara Bara, Mahaicony.
