The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) in collaboration with the National Sports Commission (NSC) will stage an Open handicap tournament this week-end at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The tournament, sponsored by national player and overseas-based Guyanese, Paul David, who has returned home for the holidays, is expected to attract the cream of the country’s racquet wielders.
Nearly 50 players are expected to blow off the dust from their racquets and compete in the scheduled two-day tourney after taking a well-deserved break for the holidays.
The tournament, which will involve both male and female players, should be interesting as there are a few female players who can hold their own with some of the male players.
National coach Linden Johnson told Stabroek Sport that the points system should add an extra thrill to the competition and challenge the stronger players to work harder for victories.
“I expect a very balanced and tight tournament and surely, all the games will be very exciting and I am confident that we will see superb table tennis from all our top players.”
Registration fee will be $100. per player and there will be cash incentives donated by David for the first, second and third-placed finishers.
Johnson also added that this tournament would give the players a comfortable start to a year which will be full of competitions beginning with a junior tournament on January 17 and followed by a senior tournament which will usher in the annual Mashramani Tournament.
Meanwhile, David yesterday handed over a quantity of balls and other equipment to the GTTA. National female players Trenace Lowe and Michelle John received the equipment from David on behalf of the GTTA.
