A Chinese survey team is here to conduct a feasibility study of the local ship-building capacity after a request was made for the Chinese government to build the two roll-on/roll-off ferries, approved under a bilateral agreement, here.
According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the ten-man team and China’s Ambassador Zhang Jungao on Tuesday paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Trade and International Co-operation, Dr Henry Jeffrey, at his Takuba Lodge office. The delegation is on a 20-day visit and is slated to meet Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and other ministers.
The team also called on Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn. GINA said their trip is a follow-up to the September visit when the Exchange of Notes for the team was signed. Under the bilateral technical cooperation programme, the Chinese government was expected to design and construct the two vessels in China, for Guyana. The team is here to determine the feasibility of building the vessels, estimated at US$8M, locally.
