Principal Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle granted a carpenter $50,000 bail when he appeared yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court to answer to a charge of escaping lawful custody.
Lloyd Sadloo, 27, of 27 Hill Street, Albouystown, pleaded not guilty to a charge of escaping from lawful custody when he appeared in court.
It is alleged that on December 31, at the Brickdam Police Station, while in custody pending a criminal charge of robbery under arms, Sadloo escaped. Sadloo’s attorney, Mohamed Zafar, told the court that his client was with three other persons in a car, going to the Woodlands Hospital, when they were stopped by police.
He said they were taken to the said police station and two policemen, who are being investigated by the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, kept his client in custody. The counsel said the policemen had asked his client for $35,000 for his release. “He gave them and they said walk out and go,” he said.
Sadloo told the court that he had never been told about any criminal charge against him and declared that “they cook-up the whole story”.
Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith said the allegation was being investigated and said that she would not oppose bail.
After listening to the submissions, the magistrate granted bail and ordered Sadloo to appear at Court Two on January 25.
