An elderly resident of Kingelly, West Berbice who removed pieces of boards from the drainage trench that caused flooding to his garden plot was assaulted by the person who placed the “obstacles.”
Sadoo Persaud told Stabroek News that to top it off when he went to the Weldaad Police Station to report the incident he ended up being charged for “damage to property” even though “it is an offence to block the drainage trench.”
He recalled that around 6 am on December 23 he went to his garden at the back of his house and noticed that floodwater was affecting his produce. Realizing that the water had accumulated because of the boards the resident placed across the trench he decided to remove them at around 8:30 am.
Shortly after, he said he returned home to get his cutlass and was about to go and remove weeds from the trench when the man started to abuse him and threw three bottles in his direction, which missed him and scratched the back of his car.
He said the man asked him why he removed the boards and he said “ah had to move them because they were flooding my garden.” He said the man then walked up to the gate and slapped him at the corner of his left eye and caused his spectacles to fall.
“As I was looking for my spectacles he cuffed me again on my left eye and I fell to the ground. Then he started to juk me in my face with his fingers,” the man related.
He said he reported the matter to the station but the man told the police that Persaud damaged his property. He said the police did not go to investigate what caused the problem but charged him as well.
He said later in the afternoon he was going to the doctor in his car and the man “drove his truck on me and I had to drive away fast.” He reported the incident of the blockage to the Tempe/Seafield Neighbourhood Democratic Council and the chairman promised to “check it out
