Dear Editor,
I refer to the letter by Roshan Khan captioned “TIN is a necessary measure” (08.01.09). In it he recommended that the TIN number should be used to check the background of citizens and citizens must produce identification when stopped on the streets of Guyana. Mr Khan also implies that citizens of the US must produce their social security cards to identify themselves.
I wish to inform him that the authorities in the USA advise that citizens must try not to carry around their SSN cards, but rather place them in a secure place and try to memorize the number.
Further, the last time I checked Guyana is not under a dictatorship or under military rule where citizens are compelled to produce identification on the streets.
I hope Guyana never reaches that stage.
Yours faithfully,
LN Ramnarine
