Dear Editor,
Freddie Kissoon writes “First, there is no such thing as political science. That term died a long time ago. Human behaviour is not subject to the laws of the natural sciences as Karl Marx myopically believed. University curricula refer to programmes in political studies, political theory, political philosophy and comparative politics.
“Maybe in communist countries the curriculum has a programme called political science.” (KN 12/01/08)
As a student at the City University of New York this is news to me, because my declared major is Political Science. We have a Political Science department and a political science club. There are political studies, political theory, political philosophy and comparative politics, there is also international politics, political leadership, politics of crime etc all falling under the umbrella of political science. The term political science did not start with Marx and therefore did not die with him, also it is not referred to as “political natural science”.
Political science is simply the study of politics.
Yours faithfully,
Asif Mohamed
