The Linden Mayor and Town Council has expressed satisfaction with the recent move by Mackenzie vendors to occupy the newly constructed Mackenzie wharf.
Vendors who were given shops at the wharf relocated on Monday, in keeping with their commitment to the Council. The council, in collaboration with the Linden Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Development (LCCID) developed the wharf facility for the vendors in order to restore the riverside to its former glory.
Councillor Winston Smith said the vendors deserve a “tap on the back” for following through on the deal. He said too the partnership with the LCCID will see the riverside developed into a park.
The Council had ordered the vendors to occupy their spots on the wharf during the last quarter of 2007. When they failed to comply it conducted a demolition exercise which resulted in several stalls being broken down. The vendors had responded by storming the Council saying that it had been unfair since the stalls they were expected to occupy were incomplete. A resolution was made and the vendors agreed to relocate by January 14.
While traversing the areas last Sunday night Stabroek News observed vendors dismantling their stalls along the road and moving to the new site. This exercise continued on Monday morning. The Council assisted in transporting the vendors’ belongings to the new location as well as in clearing the road of debris.
