A $15M dormitory will soon be built at Orealla to house students from that community as well as from neighbouring Siparuta.
A Government Information Agency (GINA) press release said the project is expected to be completed by April.
Region Six Regional Chairman, Zulficar Mustapha, said in addition to quality accommodation, the dormitory will also provide free meals. Its establishment will also reduce transportation costs for parents.
Mustapha said last year a new health centre was built at a cost of $5M to facilitate easier access to medical care and residents have also been the recipients of a boat donated by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
According to GINA, last year many developmental projects were completed to enhance the image of the community. Orealla is the only Amerindian community in the Region. It is located about 60 miles up the Corentyne River and has a population of about 600.
