The Georgetown Legal Aid Clinic is expanding it services to other parts of the country and to this end had advertised for lawyers and legal clerks to be stationed in two areas outside Georgetown.
An advertisement in yesterday’s edition of this newspaper for full-time lawyers and three full-time legal clerks is part of the organisation’s effort to ensure that as many persons as possible countrywide can access its services.
According to the advertisement, four lawyers are needed for Georgetown and one each for New Amsterdam and Anna Regina, while one legal clerk each is needed at the three offices.
Persons are asked to send in their applications to the George-town Legal Aid Clinic located in the Maraj Building at the corner of Charlotte and King streets. Closing date for applications is February 15. Only recently the clinic started free access to legal representation for children through a UNICEF funded project.
The project is being executed in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and UNICEF.
The clinic came on board after those two bodies approached it and put the proposal forward. The initial funding from UNICEF will be for one year, but there is a possibility that it could be ongoing with government support depending on the success of this pilot period. The initiative now sees any child between the ages of zero and 18 years old, who needs assistance with a criminal or civil matter, being provided with same.
The service is free and Attorney-at-law Faith McGusty is the legal aid lawyer for the children. Children who need legal aid can contact the clinic at telephone number, 225-6896 even as the ministry is in the process of setting up a child helpline which may be a 24-hour one.
