The GMC says establishing an agro-processors association (AA) would improve product quality, uniformity and competitive pricing of produce, all integral to the growth of the industry.
In a press release Guyana Marketing Corporation (GMC) General Manager Nizam Hassan said maximising processed products as well as sales on the local market depends on product quality and cost. “Many of the processed products in Guyana are directly competing with those that are imported, and as such, there must be some meaningful incentive for consumers to choose commodities made in Guyana,” Hassan said. He also pointed out that “value for money” is a consumer’s primary objective and agro-processors must consider this.
Hassan said in this regard an AA would stipulate, through an established system consistent with international practices, the required standards for specific products in terms of content, quality and packaging. At the same time, the GM lauded the standards agro-processors currently employ in their production of bottled seasoning, sauces, spices, pepper and other condiments.
According to the release AAs or similar entities are active worldwide and have made significant contributions to the development of the industry. If the local industry is to grow, Hassan said, a similar system must be created locally.
