A 37-year-old man claiming to be homeless was given a place of abode for two years by Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle after he stole money from a market vendor who employed him periodically for seven years.
Mohan Ramkissoon pleaded guilty to a charge of simple larceny yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
Reports are that on January 17, Chaterpaul Bharrat placed the sum of $128,000 under a carpet in his stall. Bharrat then left the stall to address a customer. He stood approximately 20 feet from his stall.
From his position, he had clear view of his stall and saw Ramkissoon remove the money. An alarm was raised and Ramkissoon attempted to escape, but he was pursued and apprehended by Bharrat. A report was later made at the Alberttown Police Station and Ramkissoon was arrested.
Throwing himself at the mercy of the court, Ramkissoon said he was homeless and had no family. To this, the magistrate gave a fit reply. Instead of three years imprisonment for the offence, she gave him two and pointed out that he was lucky because he would now have a place to stay.
