Footballers in the capital city and its surroundings can look eagerly forward to the new month when two tournaments, Mayor Hamilton Green’s 73rd birth anniversary football tournament and the annual Mayor’s Cup invitational tournament are scheduled to commence.
Mayor Hamilton’s 73rd birth anniversary tournament will take the form of a seven-a-side, inter ward/street/village tournament and will take place at the Banks DIH ground while the annual Mayor’s Cup tournament is open only to invited teams and will be contested at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
The inter-ward/street/village football competition begins on February 2 with 10 preliminary matches including the opening fixture which pits Beterverwagting against North East La Penitence at 5.30pm.
After the preliminary rounds of this tournament a knock-out stage will commence on February 6 with the semi-final and final set for February 20.
The Mayor’s Cup Invitational tournament will commence on February 8 with Camptown opposing Ann’s Grove and Alpha United taking on Mahaica on the opening night.
The competition will continue every week-end at the GFC ground until its completion.
The sixteen teams that will be featured in the Mayor’s Cup invitational tournament are Camptown, Ann’s Grove, Alpha United, Mahaica, Mocha Champs, Bakewell Top XX, Pele, Buxton, The Guyana Defence Force, Beterverwagting Triumph, Western Tigers, Pouderoyen, Rusal, Uitvlugt, Fruta Conquerors and Monedderlust.
Those teams will vie for the first prize of $500,000.
The runners-up will receive $200,000 with the third and fourth-placed teams receiving $100,000 and $50,000 respectively. (Kiev Chesney)
