In one of the most brazen attacks in recent history, gunmen last night blasted three policemen manning the western gate at the Police Headquarters, Eve Leary, hitting two in their legs and leaving the force scrambling to protect its base.
It is not clear who was behind the attack and their motives could not be determined last night, Police Commissioner, Henry Greene said. Guyana’s number 1 fugitive, Rondell ‘Fineman’ Rawlins is believed to have upped the ante against the security forces following the alleged abduction of his girlfriend. A man purporting to be Rawlins contacted Criminal Invest-igation Department headquarters on Wednesday warning officers there that if his girlfriend did not return he would create mayhem. Since then police had said they had upped security arrangements but this did not stop the criminals from engaging the army on Wednesday night in Buxton killing one soldier and wounding another during a 20-minute shootout. Last night the gunmen turned their attention to the police.
Speaking to Stabroek News, Greene said that some time after 10 pm, a carload of gunmen pulled up at the corner of Parade Street and Young Street, Eve Leary in front of the canon at the TSU base. He said the men stopped their vehicle and fired several shots, hitting two policemen, who were keeping the company of the sentry at the time. The gunmen’s assault also saw bullets drilling several holes in the wall of the fence. Greene said the gunmen escaped shortly after along Carifesta Avenue. The Commissioner also said that ranks recovered several 5.56 rounds which are used in M-16 rifles. One of the injured men has been identified as Constable McAlmont.
