President Bharrat Jagdeo this morning said that the security forces will soon get in line and instructions had been given for them to do whatever it took to dominate the criminals.
At a press conference at State House, Jagdeo said that “Clearly the motive of the gunmen was to execute innocent people”. He said that they were hell-bent on creating terror and may have succeeded. “But we have to ensure that at the national level we don’t allow this to affect our response,” the President told the media.
Jagdeo said that early this morning he met with the heads of the security forces and he told them to dominate the criminals. He said it would take a while before the security forces are fully mobilised, noting that the security personnel have to get in line and some of them would have to be brought to town. Residents told this newspaper that close to 25 gunmen wielding rifles descended on the village. The gunmen according to reports divided up into sub-groups and targeted five homes. The gunmen left behind a trail of blood, numerous spent shells and live rounds along with a pair of binoculars and a torch light.
Lamenting the scale and brutality of the attack Jagdeo said that the perpetrators were sick. “Only sick and demented cowards could kill defenceless children,” the President declared. Jagdeo said that he has since dispatched a team of cabinet ministers to the area and he will visit later today. His ministers had a hostile reception from Lusignan residents who were in no mood to listen to them.
