Residents of Cummings Lodge will have new roads and proper drainage by yearend and while expressing happiness they stressed that these facilities are long overdue.
Workers attached to H. S. Nauth and Sons Construction Company are currently in the process of constructing about 19 roads in the East Coast community. In the process of their road construction they will also be looking after drainage and pipeline distribution in the area.
The European Union/Government of Guyana construction of infrastructure and services low-income housing project began in October last year and is expected to be completed in October this year.
Stabroek News was told on Friday that the project has been divided into two parts – Cumming Lodge, east and west. Work has not yet started in the east.
The workers are currently grading the main access road and laying large diameter pipes across it as well as building culverts.
Since the housing area came into existence more than ten years ago, basic infrastructure like roads, light and water was not available.
Residents began receiving electricity almost two years ago and now they are getting proper roads.
No more flooding
Stabroek News spoke to several residents living near the road at present under construction and they all expressed joy that they will be getting roads.
Residents told this newspaper that before the construction began, the drains and the main trench in the area were clogged with bushes and other material.
And when the rain falls, their yards and in some cases their homes would be flooded. They said that another advantage of this construction is that the tall bush that flanked the road is no longer there so they are not in fear of being robbed by criminals hiding there or bitten by insects as they pass.
Nutan Budhoo, a resident who lives just off the access road, told Stabroek News on Friday that she feels good about roads being built in her area.
“I feel good about this because when the rain falls the road would flood and then water gets into my house. What they are doing is very good,” Budhoo said.
She explained that the flooding came about because the trench was clogged with grass and the road was too low.
The resident told this newspaper that since work began in the area, the drains have been cleaned and some work is being done every day.
She expressed satisfaction that the thick bush at the side of the road has been cleared.
“This is a welcome something. I have been looking forward to good roads for twelve years now,” Budhoo said.
Another resident also supported all the comments made by Budhoo. The resident said that she is happy that there will be roads. She has been living in the Cummings Lodge area for some ten years now.
Residents while welcoming the efforts expressed the hope that the roads will remain in a good condition for a long time.
