In wake of the massacre in the village of Lusignan that left 11 persons, including five children dead, the People’s Progressive Party has called on the security forces to “aggressively pursue all measures to bring about the arrest of those responsible for the attacks and to take vigorous actions to destroy the criminal gangs.”
The party in a release condemned the slaying of the 11 persons and also condemned the murder and attacks of the security forces in Buxton and the attack on police headquarters, Eve Leary, on Friday night which they described as well coordinated and “centrally directed terrorist attack.”
The PPP said it joins with the nation in their collective anger and rage over the massacre but called on the residents of that village and those of the adjoining communities to remain calm and allow the authorities to pursue their work without any hindrance.
In another release the party said it understood the protests that have been taking place adding that it shared the pain of the mourning people, but added that it was very important that calm was maintained, despite the hurt and anger. “We should avoid all actions that would give the perpetrators of this terrible deed any satisfaction that they have succeeded to sow such great mayhem in our society,” the release said.
According to the PPP, religious bodies and civil organisations can assist in bringing some level of tranquillity in the situation. The media, the party said, can also play an important and constructive role by avoiding the temptation to further sensationalise an already difficult situation.
The party called on all to remain calm while stating that while it understood the anger it found it unfortunate that some unscrupulous persons were using this grave situation to push forward hidden agendas for personal benefits or for other political ends.
Condolences were also expressed to the relatives of the deceased persons and also to the entire village.
