Dear Editor,
I have been residing in the US over a year. I read the Guyana news every morning online. I still miss Guyana, as it’s my “home” and will always be. I was horrified to read on a BBC website about the horrendous slaying of residents of Lusignan. I immediately tuned in to BBC World News where I saw a bit about it, it was also mentioned on the local Bronx 12 News.
I am deeply disturbed about this news; so was I when the pressmen were slaughtered at Kaieteur News some time aback.
I have friends who want me to come back to Guyana for a week during my vacation time, but the crime situation is getting so out of control that I fear being there. I love Guyana just like the thousands of Guyanese residing here in the US, but there is always a “but” when it comes to going back or spending a “vacation” back home!
I am so sick of the situation in Guyana, I get furious when I think back to the corruption, crime, lawlessness, bribery, mismanagement, slackness, political interference and brutality that’s there.
The government in power seems unable to manage the country, just like the previous leaders. The police/army are incapable of carrying out their respective duties. And the hurtful thing is that the government sees this and either seems impotent or turns a blind eye towards this. Well, look what has happened now!
The PPP/Civic has always “brain-washed” their supporters and fooled them in putting them into power. It’s become a norm now for them to feel confident that they will always win an election in Guyana. How right they are.
President Bharrat Jagdeo and his ministers need to resign. They are incapable of good governance. They will always sympathise with the ones that are hurt or will “denounce” the “savage or cruel” acts by “madmen”, and remain quiet thereafter.
I ask the press to continue doing a great job, but please enlighten citizens about the job of a government and its role in society and contrast other countries’ role in protecting the rights and needs of their respective citizens.
Yours faithfully,
Rajesh John
