Businessman shot in failed robbery bid

Two gunmen on a motorcycle yesterday attempted to rob an interior based businessman and ended up shooting him in the foot, outside of the Ministry of Agriculture compound, Bourda.

Mervyn Pierre, the businessman, was shot at 1.35 pm in a car which had stopped at the traffic lights at Regent Street and Vlissengen Road.

Police stated in a press release yesterday that the pillion rider pointed a handgun at Pierre and demanded cash. Police said that Pierre hit the firearm away resulting in the armed bandit discharging two rounds at him which struck him in his left foot. The man’s family said that Pierre held on to his bag while the ruckus was ongoing.

According to Police, the driver of the car accelerated and sped away and the two bandits escaped on foot, Police said.

Police said that they recovered a .32 warhead and that the investigations are continuing.

At the hospital, relatives of the man said that the he usually deals with large amounts of cash when he comes to the city from the interior on an almost weekly basis.

In the wake of an attack on Police Headquarters on Friday night, security personnel and others were on high alert at the Ministry and the nearby Office of the President after the shooting and the related commotion and immediately locked all gates.
