Dear Editor,
First of all, Stabroek News, as much as you are the vanguard of the free press and as much as you are in the forefront of the fight against police and military brutality (as you should be), I think that pretty soon there would be no one left in Guyana to fight for. All the truly law abiding, freedom loving citizens will either have migrated or have died out at the hands of these notorious criminals.
1) I call on the government to impose a state of emergency for ninety days;
2) Seek immediate help from Scotland Yard, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Federal Bureau of Investigation; Interpol; and if there is such a thing, from the CARICOM Rapid Reaction Force. Also I call on the government to hire some private security agents from North America or Europe to weed out these criminals and bring them to justice; I read the statements from the US Ambassador, and the British High Commission, and I see they are ready to help;
3) The first task of any government is to protect its citizens. As much as I admit that this government has tried, it has done so with tied hands. By declaring a state of emergency, it sends a message that this nonsense has to stop.
4) I call on the opposition leaders to agree that something prompt needs to be done.
Yours faithfully,
Sharir Chan
