My heart aches every time I remember what happened to the innocent people of Lusignan, on the east coast. I join with the masses in condoning this murderous act.
As I was looking at the live telecast when the government was trying to pacify the deceased family members and angry residents, the President made it abundantly clear that he is going to get the call log from GT&T and find out who was the police officer that took the call that morning and the highest form of discipline will be taken.
I was happy to hear that coming from the President, because for too long, the Guyana Police Force has been a great embarrassment to this country even though their resources have been tremendously increased compared to 1992.
I couldn’t wait for Monday to read the newspapers, hoping to see the name of that police officer, but to my surprise, none of the newspapers had it.
I am very disappointed that such a small matter is taking so long. It will bring some solace to the relatives that work is being done, to resuscitate professionalism and dignity in the police force, and to bring justice.
This is one of the things that contributes to the retrogression of our society. We need to be more assertive and proactive in executing our duties.
I am still optimistic that the police officer will be named and he/she will be made an example.
