After playing most of their regular season games at the outdoor Burham Basketball Court, the Guyana Secondary Schools Basketball Associa-tion (GSSBA) has been granted permission to use the National Gymnasium.
According to representatives of the GSSBA, they received permission from Director of Sport, Neil Kumar, on Monday and they immediately began marking the floor of the Gymnasium and erecting portable basketball hoops.
Two basketball hoops have already been set up in the Gymnasium, and the GSSBA plans to distribute eight more backboards to secondary schools country wide.
The GSSBA also reported that they have received a tax exemption from the Minster of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony which will allow the backboards to be cleared.
Commissioner of the GSSBA games Dennis Clarke, said that he was looking forward to the move indoors and even more support from the players and fans.
He also mentioned that playing indoors will ensure that the regular season finishes on schedule so that they can get into the other festivities planned such as the much-anticipated All-Star weekend and March madness playoffs.
“Now that we are indoors, we will have the chance to finish all the regular season games on time and not have to be rescheduled because of the rain as before,” he said.
Clarke also expressed gratitude for the cooperation received from the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
With both backboards erected and the gymnasium floor marked, GSSBA games will continue this afternoon.
