At least two foreign teams are expected to take part in this year’s Inter-Market football tournament billed for later this year, organizers disclosed in an interview with Stabroek Sport at the weekend.
O’neil Durant and Michael Vanderstoop, directors of Stabroek Warriors Sports Group, disclosed that negotiations were ongoing to bring two teams from Trinidad and Tobago for the event billed to take place late July or early August.
Durant said that General Manager of Guyana Beverage Company, Robert Selman, was in contact with the two clubs from the twin-island republic to have them here for the tournament which is likely to take place at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground.
“We are in an advanced stage of preparation for the tournament. At present we have sent out letters to prospective sponsors and we will be finalizing dates for the event soon,” Durant disclosed.
According to Durant, this year’s tournament was expected to attract teams from all the municipalities around the country including Berbice, who were not represented when the competition was last held in 2006.
Among the municipalities that had participated in the past and will again be in contention for the top prize are Stabroek, La Penitence, Bourda, Parika, Wismar, Vendors Arcade, Buxton, Kitty and Mackenzie.
Durant said his group would be writing to the Ministry of Local Government seeking support while over the years the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) had always been supportive of the tournament.
The Inter-Market football tournament has been a regular fixture of the local football calendar since it was launched in 2003.
