Dear Editor,
The President and PPP/C government has to my mind had to make some of the toughest decisions ever in their fifteen years in office, so far.
There are some who have already speculated that the PPP/C has lost votes and support following the Lusignan tragedy but they are going to be very disappointed.
The President and government had to make the tough decisions that were in the best interests of the country and society, and they did, as time is showing.
They also suffered from the pain , anger and frustration as the rest of Guyanese did but had to fulfil their duties as the leaders of the country.
People from the community and elsewhere wanted to march in protest and also there were those who were inciting such protests for their own personal and other agendas. However the law must be obeyed and procedures followed to carry out such actions.
Protests, however well-intentioned could soon have been infiltrated by those who had no real sympathy for the victims, their families and community, by criminal elements, who would have created confusion and the protests would easily have degenerated into lawlessness, wreaking much harm on peaceful citizens.
While there are complaints of some excesses and injudicious actions by the police, these are sure to be investigated and appropriate sanctions imposed where appropriate. Actions could not have been allowed which would have caused those who wished to protest to fall into the very trap set by the criminals and those who control and direct them.
We must all remain united and in peace and harmony while we allow our security forces to effectively and speedily pursue the criminals.
Yours faithfully,
John Da Silva
