Spectators came out in their numbers last Sunday at the National Gymnasium to witness a sport predominantly played by men in Guyana.
What they did not expect was to be thoroughly entertained by a thrilling, highly competitive and extremely physical match between the girls of Charlestown Second-ary School and New Campbellville Secondary.
In the first ever female game of the Guyana Secondary Schools Basket-ball league, the ladies of the New Cambellville Secondary recorded a 16-5 victory against the girls of Charles-town.
Fans were out of their seats, cheering for the girls from the sidelines, as these girls showed more energy and perseverance than seen in some of the men’s games.
The ladies seemed not to be fully aware of a few rules of the game and were often found guilty by the referees for committing travelling (more than two steps without bouncing) and double-dribble (dribbling with both hands simultaneously).
Utilizing the little skills they possessed, the ladies gave the best effort on every possession, especially New Campbellville.
The Cambellville girls were better shooters as their team was made up of many netball players.
Andrisca Jaungaye led the way for Campbellville with 8 points while her teammate Lowquan Gibson added six. Tandika Kelly scored all five of Charlestown’s points, 2 in the first and 3 in the second half.
In the first game on Sunday, Cummings Lodge managed to remain undefeated as they demoralized Charlestown in a 85-22 blowout.
Remarkable enough, Cum-mings Lodge scored forty-three points at halftime, with Bevon Spooner already capturing a double-double of 14 points and 10 assists.
His final numbers were 24 points, 13 assists and 6 steals while Keon Hayles led all scores with 29 points, 4 rebounds to go along with Colwin Nurse’s 24 points and 4 rebounds for a grand total of 78 of the team’s 85 points for the offensively talented trio. Raybourne Bowman got minimal help from his teammates and scored 19 of the 22 Charlestown points.
St John’s College defeated East Ruimveldt Secondary 59-26 with Keith Tute scoring 20 points to continue the offensive assault on the gymnasium hoops that he started the day before against Trust College. Denis Horatio equalled his season high with 14 points for St. John’s while Leon Prince added 10 points for East Ruimveldt.
Central High School stunned Tutorial High 45-30 as the combination of Jamal Thompson and Travis Burnett proved to be too much for the Tutorial defence to contain.
Burnett top scored with 18 points and Jamal Thompson added 10 points.
Michael Thompson had a quiet 10-point game while Delon Daniels also scored 10 points for Tutorial in their fourth loss of the season.
Queen’s College moved to 8-2 after benefiting from a walkover from the Guyana Education Trust College on Sunday.
