Dear Editor,
I congratulate the hardworking management, staff and illustrious editorial team of the Stabroek News for the professional manner in which numerous issues of national importance have been reported over the past several months. Your numerous special reports and editorials serve to highlight issues ranging from climate change to corruption. However, the regime of the day aided and abetted by certain multilateral and even bilateral funding agencies continues to operate with impunity and with no regard for the fundamental rights of the average Guyanese man, woman or child.
There is little opposition as we all know only too well that the so called opposition PNCR-1G is nothing but a toothless poodle with a rudderless leadership that seems more concerned with matters of self preservation than offering some promise of liberation. The only way that most folks are trying to liberate themselves is by voting with their feet – be it in a legal form of migration or the so called backtracking.
The economic gains that were realised under the late President Hoyte are merely a memory. Reynolds Aluminium (now owned by Alcoa) pulled out of the Aroaima joint venture and the Russian corporation Rusal took over. The former operations of Omai Gold Mines (owned by Canadian based Cambior) were hived off to the Chinese owned Bosai. Whatever remains of the Malay-Korean entity of Barama will sooner or later be forced to wind down. Digicel on the other hand is owned by Irish billionaire Denis O’ Brien which is a rare oddity amidst this brew.
Guyana’s soul is weeping and it is about time that the national interests are squarely placed above petty personal vendettas, political agendas and partisan interests. I stand ready as a son of this soil if asked by civil society to assist. I am prepared to use my own resources and global relationships to engage the well renowned Mandela Center for Peace as well as the Clinton Foundation or even the Martin Luther King Foundation with a view to bringing a credible solution aimed at helping to resolve the current quagmire our beloved country finds itself in.
Yours faithfully,
Mike Singh
