Three policemen accused of taking $30,000 as a bribe from a man for not charging his son who was in police custody, were yesterday freed when the complainant said the money was being passed to his son and declined to proceed with the matter
Lester Kitt, 29, of 543 South Sophia, Georgetown; Kelvin Mitchell, 27, of 41 Pattensen, Turkeyen; and Ryvan Alleyne, 27, of 165 East Ruimveldt appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with corrupt transaction by a government agent.
However, their lawyer told the court that one of the officers was simply passing an envelope from the complainant to his son and had no knowledge of what was in the envelope.
Faizal Ali, the virtual complainant, then said he didn’t wish to proceed with the matter and agreed that he had given the envelope to one of the officers to pass on to his son who was sitting on the bench inside of the police station.
Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle ordered each policeman to pay $5,000 in court costs and the matter was dismissed.
