The e-mail from Mr Hunte of the WICB to Mr Ian Bishop printed in Wednesday’s SN is fascinating, less from a cricket point of view and more about the issues of innovative leadership and resource mobilisation in the West Indies. For all intents and purposes, it would appear that Mr Hunte told Mr Bishop that only persons who could attend face to face meetings of the WICB could actually be on the committee and that ‘distance was a factor’ in which the West Indian greats were relegated to special advisors who could drop in on meetings when they were in Trinidad.
This is a sad indictment of the regional leadership. Face to face meetings are fast becoming things of the past and if the Caribbean has to mobilise knowledge and talent from the diaspora, it would mean using the technology such as videoconferences and teleconferencing to do so.
Prime Minister Mitchell of Grenada is/was chair of the Caricom sub regional committee on cricket, and is/was also responsible for Information and Communication Technology. Surely the two could now come together in a way to ensure that West Indies cricket adminstration has access at the right levels to all persons, regardless of whether they are in the same room at the time of meetings?
The bandwidth providers in the region should be able to provide this tangible kind of support to WICB to help offset the reducing of costs in using technology.
