This Board of Inquiry is a waste of time

Dear Editor,

The Guyana Government seem to be taking one step forward and two steps backwards in trying to move the country forward. In the year 2008 President Jagdeo announced an intention to set up a Board of Inquiry to investigate how many guns were issued to government departments by all para-military organizations from 1950 to the present. This is a complete waste of time and it’s only trying to divert attention from the problems the government faces with respect to the spiralling crime situation today.

The people one would expect to give evidence to such an inquiry have either emigrated or are dead. The only guns in Guyana in the 50s and early 60s were rifles owned by the volunteer forces. Defence was the responsibility of the governor, the country was not independent in the 50s.

There are more pressing problems facing the country that President Jagdeo should address and forget about setting up this Board of Inquiry.

Yours faithfully,
