Guyana is set to be entertained next month, when the Calypso Tumblers come to town over the Easter weekend for the Calypso Fury concert.
Calypso Fury, billed as entertainment for the entire family, will run for three nights, March 22, 23 and 24 at the National Cultural Centre starting at 8 pm. Tickets cost $1,500 and $1,200.
The Calypso Tumblers, fresh from their success in making it to the finals of the NBC show America’s Got Talent, will headline the event. Sharing the spotlight with them will be another America’s Got Talent finalist, singer Robert Hatcher.
So far, Nancy’s Promotions, the name behind the event, has confirmed that the Classique Dance Troupe, the Crystalite Dancers and Tumblers and Tebogah Christian (T Chris) will also perform at the three shows, for which GT&T is the major sponsor. Banks DIH is also on board.
According to bio-data from the promotion company, the Calypso Tumblers started in the US in 1980 with just three members: John Allicock, Phillip Josiah, and Simeon Joseph Jordan, who learned their acrobatics while growing up in Guyana. Over the years, the group has expanded and now consists of Guyanese-born Clarence Chester, Sylvan Bartlette, Alex Bartlette, Lamonte Goode, Kenneth Greenaway, Michael Rodriguez.
The Calypso Tumblers, a team of accomplished acrobatic gymnast, contortionist and comedic entertainers have dazzled countless thousands of New York City tourists — an average of four million each year — in weekday performances in Battery Park and weekend performances in Washington Square.
Based in New York, they have performed throughout the United States and abroad. Their television appearances include The Arsenio Hall Show, Showtime at the Apollo, MTV’s Oddville, Good Morning America, The Today Show and Good Day, New York.
They perform each year at the Buskerfest in Denver, Colorado and have done a three-month promotional tour for a new soft drink campaign for Coca-Cola along with numerous other appearances prior to last year’s America’s Got Talent.
Hatcher, born in Cincinnati, Ohio USA is a writer, singer, musician, songwriter, director, and producer. He is also music director and musician at his local church.
According to his bio-data, Hatcher wrote his first play at the age of seven and has so far written seven plays and starred in all of them. He has also written five short novels.
He has received prestigious awards in the Virgin Islands as well as Spain for his explosive rendition of “I Won’t Complain”.
Hatcher who has a degree in communication and perfected choral singing at Central State University, was a member of the Grammy-nominated Central State chorale.
He was also on Showtime at the Apollo tour, a semi-finalist on Big Brother and one of the final 30 on American Idol among other appearances all before his America’s Got Talent shot last year.
