The Ministry of Agriculture has issued an advisory to farmers stating that
following several interactions, the Joint Services’ clearing of the backlands will minimize its impact on agricultural activities.
The advisory said that following an interaction between President Bharrat Jagdeo and religious leaders of Buxton/Friendship, and Buxton farmers with the Minister of Agriculture in Buxton, the Ministry of Agriculture has been advised by the Joint Services that its “Operation Restore Order” will minimize its impact on agricultural activities.
This objective will be achieved as the exercise involves clearing the Sideline Dam on the west and Brushe Dam on the east, areas on either side of the farming area.
The drainage and irrigation canals in the backlands will also be cleaned and desilted and vegetation from a section of the plots behind the residential area will be cleared. However, permanent crops like mango trees will not be removed unless deemed necessary.
Further, the Ministry advised, farmers will be facilitated by the Joint Services to reap their produce and markets can be arranged for perishables if needed. The clearing operation is expected to last for four weeks but certain agricultural crops may be considered for cultivation after this period.
The advisory added that the Joint Services will be supported by Ministry of Agriculture personnel to advise and provide support to farmers at the Joint Services Compensation Desk which has been set up.
