In the wake of the Lusignan massacre, Cabinet has approved $50 million to purchase items that will aid Community Policing Groups (CPGs) in ‘C’ division (East Coast Demerara) in their support of the fight against crime.
According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), the funds will be used to purchase protective gear, uniforms, vehicles and torches among other items that are needed by the CPGs.
Although there are sworn rural constables who are licensed firearm holders some groups are asking for more of the same. Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee said that the matter is being addressed.
According to the release, there are 192 CPGs with over 3,050 members across the country.
They are formed on a voluntary basis and span the ten administrative regions. Government has been supporting these groups with resources such as boats, vehicles, motorcycles and other items, GINA said.
