Several communities in Region Six, East Berbice, Corentyne are to benefit from fast drainage relief, according to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release.
The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), the Guyana Sugar Corporation and the Region Six Administration have collaborated to ensure that several villages: Port Mourant, Canefield, Adelphi Housing Scheme, Lancaster and Black Bush Polder, receive relief from the accumulation of surface water due to recent intense rainfall.
Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud recently led a team of NDIA officials and regional personnel to visit the affected areas. The team met with farmers and residents to discuss means of getting rid of the accumulated water. Port Mourant residents were told that a GuySuCo water pump will be mobilised immediately to aid drainage in that area, while over-hanging vegetation on the northern side of the Joppa outfall canal will be removed in Black Bush Polder. Additionally two mobile pumps will be installed at Canje and neighbouring areas. Canefield residents are to benefit from the clearing of the “Pepper sluice,” to be done by GuySuCo.
