Mayor Hamilton Green’s 73rd birth anniversary will be marked by a grand Inter-Ward, Street/Village football tournament beginning with four intriguing matches today from 6pm at Thirst Park.
In the first match-up this evening Albouystown will go against Golden Grove while Kingston will engage Grove in the second game.
Later in the evening, Laing Avenue will take on Mahaica followed by Mocha versus Agricola in a battle for supremacy on the East Bank of Demerara.
The tournament continues on Saturday with another five matches. Tucville will contest Goed Fortuin, Parika will meet Buxton and Beterverwagting will duel North East La Penitence.
Later that evening Pouderoyen will engage Den Amstel and West Ruimveldt will go head-to-head with Meten-Meer-Zorg in the featured game of the evening.
Later on this month, the much anticipated Mayor’s Cup Invitational tournament will get underway and bring out the loyal football fans in their numbers.
When the tournament begins on February 29, it will attract sixteen teams vying for a total of $750,000 in prize money.
The sixteen teams are Camptown, Ann’s Grove, Alpha United, Mahaica, Mocha Champs, Bakewell Top XX, Pele, Buxton, The Guyana Defence Force, Beterverwagting Triumph, Western Tigers, Pouderoyen, Rusal, Uitvlugt, Fruta Conquerors and Monedderlust.
Those teams will vie for the first place prize of $500,000 compliments of Digicel, second place prize of $200,000, compliments of the Guyana Lottery Company, third place prize of $100,000 donated by the Guyana Oil Company and fourth place prize of $50,000 donated by Joe Hill.
The Mayor’s Cup Invitational tournament will be played at the GFC ground. In the first match of the tournament, 2007 Kashif and Shanghai Champions Alpha United will play Mahaica while Western Tigers takes on Pouderoyen to wrap up the first day of the competition.
