Police arrested a taxi driver after a Brazilian miner was attacked and robbed of cash and a large amount of diamonds at Hope Public Road, East Bank Demerara yesterday.
In a press release, police said investigations revealed that at about 4.20 am Henrique Botenzine, 43, of Oronoque Street, Queenstown, was in a taxi proceeding along the public road when the vehicle allegedly broke down.
While the driver was apparently making efforts to fix it, gunmen accosted Botenzine and the driver. They took the diamonds, US$1,500, a number of credit cards and a cellular phone from Botenzine and a quantity of jewellery and $15,000 from the driver, then escaped.
