Police ranks and officials from the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) were on Tuesday night caught in gunfire while returning from Hog Island where they found 17 drums of suspected illegal fuel, among other items.
In a press release police said they along with GEA officials, acting on information, journeyed to the Essequibo River island where they found the fuel, two empty tanks and 19 empty drums that were abandoned.
At about 9 pm, while they were leaving the island, they came under fire. Police said several rounds were discharged at them from along the bank of the creek, and they returned fire. No member of the police/GEA team was injured.
Investigations are continuing.
