Dear Editor,
It is with great sadness that I write this letter. As a young person I would like to know what is really happening in our country. No, wonder people can’t wait to get out of this country. What future can a young person look for in Guyana? Every day persons are killed either by accident or murder and not many, if any, are brought to justice; some for various reasons such as political affiliations or simply because our law enforcement agencies can’t seem to do what they are paid by the taxpayers to do.
We have had so many reasons for their incompetence and quite frankly I, like so many others think that it is time for action and no more excuses should be allowed from those in authority. How many more must die before someone takes some responsibility. Would you blame a thief for breaking and entering your home when you have been paying a security guard to watch your home?
I have heard the president, the ministers, my friends and several other people make comments that “Every country has crime”, “Look at Trinidad and Jamaica”, “Our government is doing their best” and so forth. Let me say, if this is the administration’s best, then their best is not good enough and someone else should be given the opportunity to make an effort to stop this lawlessness. Some talk show hosts have been advising people to stay in their homes etc.
Do you remember where the people in Lusignan were when they met their deaths? Guyanese are no longer safe, not even in their homes. And who should we blame?
I remind the Government and those in authority that the reason they are there is to serve, protect and manage the affairs of this country. It is their duty not a favour granted to the Guyanese people. We keep hearing about the past all the time, who used to do what, when etc. Our biggest problem is that we keep looking back and we seem to forget to look forward.
To all politicians, stop the politics and do your duty ie attempting to make Guyana a safe place; and one people, one nation and one destiny.
It’s time you guys work together because you the politicians are responsible for this nation being divided.
Yours faithfully,
Mark Douglas
