Shuttles were launched back and forth as enthusiastic youngsters took to the Queen’s College badminton courts on Monday afternoon for the Guyana Badminton Association’s National Mashramani Singles tournament.
While most of the players at the tournament were Queen’s College students, it also attracted players from ABC Academy, Marian Academy and School of the Nations.
Some 17 matches were played on Monday in four different age categories to conclude the preliminaries and most of the quarter- final matches of the tournament.
Adrian Rodrigues and Narayan Ramdhani both secured mammoth victories in their quarter-final matches in the boys’ under-15 category.
Nine-year-old Narayan proved that he could compete with the bigger boys in the U-15 when he convincingly defeated an older competitor, Mahendra Doraisami in straight sets 21-6.21-3; Rodrigues defeated second form Queen’s College student Kevin Quaicoe, 21-5 and 21-1.
Naryana also defeated David Hohenkirk 21-0, 21-5 in the boys’ under-11, while Priyanna Ramdhani and Lidya Alphonso qualified to play each other in the girls’ under-11 finals after scoring wins over Maya Persram and Emma Vieira.
