Dear Editor,
I had written a letter to you sometime ago on three questions which was never printed. Please allow me to repeat one – What if Fineman attacks up on the Corentyne, would the government bulldoze the cane fields? This was really a bit of sarcasm for my disgust of the government’s illogical and visionless response to the serious threats we all can anticipate much clearer now.
I have been reading the various letters describing the gunmen as insurgents, terrorists, freedom fighters, bandits, criminals. Has anyone ever considered that these guys are basically paid foot soldiers, that they are effectively handled. Father Rodrigues and the others who are calling for dialogue are correct only if the handlers have a political issue with the government. The past incidents are really strategic when you come to look at it and the government’s res-ponse led by Prem Misir is likened to the same wanton disregard for Guyanese lives but this time for propaganda impact.
As soon as the government through the President and Dr. Luncheon and other war-mongers dismissed the suggestion for dialogue as a non starter, a very strategic target was hit….one PPP, the other PNC. And there are many more such targets which may already have been identified. Who are the handlers of these mercenaries and what if their motives are not politically driven. Given the targets so far one wonders whether their objectives are political or just to cause destabilization so that other activities can go on unhindered.
Let’s see the government’s next move in this high stakes game.
Yours faithfully,
Evan Thomas
