Dear Editor,
Approximately three weeks after the brutal slaying of our sisters, brothers and children in Lusignan, twelve more people have met the same horrible end in Bartica. This has to stop.
Last night the daughter of one of us wept bitterly and said “I don’t want to live in this country no more. I don’t want to stay here no more. I don’t care where we go.” She is eight. The trauma on our children is too much. This has to stop.
We call on the Government, all political leaders, all religious and non-religious leaders to come together and work towards ending the violence in our country.
This is not a time for useless speeches, it is not a time for finger pointing and casting blame. The Bartica killings suggest that isolating a community because it is perceived to be the safe haven for criminals will not solve the problem either.
The time has come for all our leaders to put away self-interest and to work together in the best interest of our country to regain peace and stability with justice.
Yours faithfully,
Nicola Marcus and Halima Khan
