Local long distance campaigner Lionel D’Andrade will be competing in the world-renowned CLICO Trinidad and Tobago international marathon tomorrow in Chaguanas, Trinidad.
Apart from being Trinidad’s only internationally-certified marathon, the CLICO marathon is one the Caribbean’s most prestigious marathons and has in the past attracted participants from Norway, Kenya, Canada, Germany, South America, USA and territories throughout the Caribbean, according to the official race website.
D’Andrade said that he had been informed about this event since October and had been preparing ever since.
He told Stabroek Sport that he had been anxiously looking towards participating in this event since he hoped to break the Guyana national marathon record.
“In November I ran 2 hrs, 48 minutes in Suriname and I have been improving through hard work and training that I have put in over the months so I am very confident that I can break the national record,” he said.
Organizers of the event have also mentioned on the website that this year’s race will feature the defending champions Hillary Lelei of Kenya and Mary Akor of the USA, along with Pamenos Ballantyne of St. Vincent, Joanna Gront-Chmiel of Poland, John Muriithi of Kenya, Jefferson Rivas and Uvilma Ruiz Sanchez of Venezuela, Curtis Cox and Jeffery Holder of Trinidad and Tobago and Katie Ryan of the USA.
