Nicholas Ali defeated Avian Rodrigues in straight sets to claim the under-15 title as the Guyana Badminton Assoc-iation’s (GBA) Mash-ramani singles tournament climaxed on Friday at the Queen’s College courts.
In one of the most anticipated matches of the first GBA tournament for the year, Ali and Rodrigues battled it out for the under-15 singles title as well as for bragging rights of being Queen’s College’s best male player
The first set lived up to expectations with both players giving their best on every shot and each refusing to concede a point.
Ali, however, stuck with it and managed to come out on top to take an early 1-0 lead after winning the first set 22-20.
In the second set however, Ali got an early lead and managed to close out Rodrigues winning the second set 21-8.
In the girls’ under 15 final Anissa Ridrigues won by default over Ashranica Persaud.
Stabroek Sport understands that the emotions of family members of both players got involved in the game.
Each player had won a set before controversy arose in the final set between family members and the umpire after which, members of Persaud’s family withdrew her from the match.
In the other final, however, Narayan Ramdhani defeated Aman Alvis in consecutive sets to claim victory in the boys under-12 singles final.
