The Banks DIH-sponsored Plus Energy lawn tennis tournament served off at Le Meridien Pegasus courts on Monday.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Banks representative, Other Malts Brands manager,Anthony Lewis, emphasized the need for discipline, as he urged the 73 participants to abide by the rules of the game. Additionally, noting that tennis demands the expenditure of much energy, Lewis disclosed that Plus Energy had been chosen as the official tournament drink because it was the ideal replenisher.
General Secretary of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association(GLTA), Grace McCalmon, said that in the past, Banks-DIH had been the sponsor of the biggest, local tennis tournament-the Year-end Open Masters’ tournament. She asserted that Banks’s continued involvement with the sport was therefore irrefutable proof of the company’s commitment to the further development of the game. She also thanked the participants for their interest in the tournament and urged them to read the code of conduct and to be watchful of their conduct during the tournament. The indefatigable GLTA official also made a stirring appeal for greater spectator support, stating that on many occasions matches featuring top players were poorly attended.
Meanwhile, in the first tournament results, Tiago Reece gained a walk-over from Brian Johnson and Savion David-Tonge gained a walk-over from Nigel Niles,in the Men’s Open Singles final.
