Michelle John turned back a determined challenge from Trenace Lowe to capture the women’s singles title as the national table tennis championships sponsored by the National Sports Commission continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
John dropped the first game 8-11 but bounced back to take the next three sets 11-9, 11-6,-11-8.
Third place in the round robin final went to Jody Ann Blake who defeated the defending champion Vida Moore, 9-11, 12-10, 11-2, and 14-12.
John defeated Moore 11-7, 11-6, 11-3 and Blake 9-11, 12-10, 11-2, 14-12 while Lowe defeated Blake 13-11, 11-8, 11-4 and Moore 11-9, 12-10, 11-9.
Lowe however gained some measure of revenge when she teamed up with Nigel Bryan to defeat John and Darwin Walcott in the junior mixed doubles final.
The pair of Lowe/Bryan won 5-11, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10 and 11-9.
In the battle for third place Ambrose Thomas and Ronaldo Bharat came from 2-0 to win the remaining three sets from Tiffany Blair and Warren Hackshaw 9-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 12-10.
Meanwhile, the top eight men players will swing into action this afternoon following yesterday’s rest day to compete in the round robin finals.
The eight male players who will contest the round robin finals are Christopher Franklyn, Nigel Bryan, Darwin Walcott, Godfrey Munroe, Colin France, Paul Meusa, Edinho Lewis and Matthew Khan.
In the round of 16 Franklyn got past Denzel Hopkinson 11-6, 11-9, 11 -2;Walcott upset Hewley Griffith 11-8, 11-5, 8-11, 11-6; Bryan defeated Joel Alleyne 11-8, 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-7; Munroe received a walk over from Eric Phillips; France defeated Gibran Hoosain 11-5, 11-2, 11-9; Meusa got the better of Dwayne Dick 11-7, 11-9, 13-11; Lewis beat Devon Richmond 12-10, 12-10, 11-9 and Khan beat Elishaba Johnson 11-6, 11-2, 11-6.
