Magistrate Tejnarine Ramroop refused a prison officer his pre-trial freedom when he appeared before him at the New Amsterdam Court on Monday, charged with possession of narcotics and having the substance in the prison compound.
It is alleged that on February 19, 22-year-old Alfred George had in his possession 4.5 grammes of cannabis sativa.
According to reports, George had left the prison compound during the lunch break and returned around 2:20 pm. He was seen acting in a suspicious manner and was subsequently searched.
The drug was found stashed in the right side of his boots. He reportedly said that a prisoner had sent him to purchase the item. George is represented by attorney-at-law Rohan Chandan and has to return to court on March 11.
Meanwhile Magistrate Ramroop expressed concern about the safety of the warden if he was to be placed among the other prisoners.
He inquired whether there was a separate cell for George and was told that one was available.
