The rainy weather in Guyana has not only affected the preparation of athletes but it has also caused some major competitions to be postponed.
The President’s College 4th Annual National Schools relay championships, the National Junior/ Youth Champion-ships and the Inaugural Sixth Form Schools Championships have all been postponed indefinitely because of the recent inclement weather.
The President’s College relays have been postponed since the Enmore Sports Club ground had been flooded up to early yesterday morning and organizers of the event told Stabroek Sport that they had made the decision to reschedule the event to a day in next week which will be decided later. They also mentioned that the ground would need to be dried before the grass was cut and if that was not accomplished, organizers would have to seek a venue in Georgetown since they are determined to run of the event.
The National Junior/ Youth Championships which were scheduled to take place this weekend at Enmore and the National Sixth Form Schools Championships which were scheduled for next weekend have also been postponed because of the rains.
President of the Athletics Association of Guyana, Claude Blackmore said that the rainy weather has seriously inconvenienced the competitive aspect of the athletes’ preparation for overseas events.”We are now at a great disadvantage in terms of competing regionally because the AAG has not had the opportunity to stage any competitions on the track for the year, while neighbouring territories such as Trinidad are running off their National Juniors this weekend,” he said.
Blackmore added that the association would be doing everything it possibly could to stage the Carifta trials since the 2008 Carifta Games would be held on the 22nd of March and the AAG intend to send athletes to represent Guyana.
Stabroek Sport was also informed that the AAG had a general meeting with coaches of various clubs to decide on the best possible alternative in this situation.
